The four of us gals took the Marrekech Express this weekend and spent two nights in the wonderful city of Marrakesh! We had a wonderful time. Saturday was sunny and warm in Marrakesh and rainy and cold here in Casa. Today, was cloudy and a little chillier, but still lovely.
These are photos from the villa we stayed in. There were beautiful wood carvings on the ceilings and doorways. With four of us sharing the cost of rooms and taxis it makes these weekends very affordable and tons of fun!!
We hired a tour guide to drive us up into the Atlas Mountain range and it felt a lot like my Colorado mountains. I miss them so often! They weren't nearly as tall as the Rocky Mnts and weren't covered with pine and aspen trees. They did have a lovely, winding river running through the canyon though! The little homes/villages were built on the sides of the mountains.
The driver took us to visit a Moroccan Berber home. I loved these gorgeous Berber hats the ladies had made and the men were selling outside of the home! The colors and designs were wonderful!
This is the wonderful Berber man that showed us around his family home. Here he is lifting the top of the tanshen lid to show us what his brother's wife (wife #2 by the way....wife #1 lives in the next house down...) was making for the meal.
I believe this is when the man was telling us that having two wives is God's plan. But....that "one wife, 10 problems.....4 wives, 40 problems!!" We laughed and he said, "You laugh, but it is true!" (He was actually not married himself. He must know that from his brother!!) :)
The brother is thanking us for coming!
Next, we stopped off to watch and learn how these ladies were making almond butter, oil and paste. Then we went into their little shop and bought some of the products. They were so kind and knowledgeable! What a lot of work to make these things by hand! This village of L'Arganier is the only place in the world to have this tree called the essaduira tree that this kind of almond comes from!
This is where we ate our lunch!
I slipped across the street to buy a scarf, thinking I would wear it around my neck. The guy showed me how to wear it like a Moroccan lady would wear it! :)
This is a look at the narrow little street in this village and the Atlas Mountains in the background.
All along the narrow road up the mountain we saw these old, old foot bridges that the people that live in the mountains would use every day to get to and from their homes. There were no roads that went up to the houses.
Next we went into the city of Marrakesh. Susan.....when we watched the movie "Casablanca" right before I left to come here, remember the market place?? This is it and it still looks like it did in the movie....right down to the snake charmers, the crazy monkeys and vehicles of every kind driving everywhere!!!
A view from a roof top of the market place! It was wild and didn't always smell real great!!
You know me and little kids....well, I was walking over to throw my 1/2 empty, warm coke in the trash and this little guy reached his hand up for it. I gave it to him and he grinned from ear to ear enough for me to see his two front teeth were missing! So, Judy walked over and gave him hers as well. He smiled again, left his cookies he was selling to walk over and give one of them to his mother who was a few feet away....also selling cookies and holding a baby. Sweet little guy! So, Judy goes a step further and buys one of his cookies (for like 1/2 of a US penny). She gives me half, I thank her and she says, "Oh, you think I am just being nice.....really, I figure if I'm gonna be sick, so are you!!" :) The cookie was delicious and neither of us got sick!
This is how most cafes in Morocco look.....all the chairs are faced toward the street and only men can go there! We get a little irritated about this quite often!!!
This is the adorable little kitten that sat quietly and watched us eat our meal. Cats and dogs a LOT of times have fleas and lice here....so we never feed them or touch them. ...so sad!
Bummer that today was cloudy and cool....we were going to swim and lay out by this lovely pool area! Maybe next time!
Again.....with the beautiful architecture and greenery!! LOVED it!
The olive trees were everywhere! THAT must be why we have olives at 2 out of three meals a day! :)
Just a cool light fixture!
The door ways and windows are so amazing and unique everywhere I look!
Well....that's it for my wonderful get-away weekend to Marrakesh! We had a restful, fun time and are ready to face another week with the kiddos! Blessings to all of you back home! Love you and miss you!
