Hello everyone! Yes..... don't ask me why, but they are celebrating "Back To School" this weekend!! So the grocery /odds-n-ends store (kind of Walmart type store) was having all sorts of sales and decorations everywhere! At first we right away
thought....wow! are they celebrating Christmas already?? Then Marcia asked the camera guy and he told us this wonderful news of "Back To School" day! Why it happens one month AFTER the Moroccan children have started school is beyond me....but a lot of things in Africa don't really make a whole lot of sense! :)....it's best just to smile and go along with it!
The first couple of photos today are from our meal tonight. Because of the BIG weekend stuff going on the restaurants were all lined with cars outside them. We decided to go to the Tennis Club that is a small restaurant in the club right behind our school. We had been there several times before, but not since Ramadan was over. There were more people there tonight. The first photo is of the many tennis courts. The second photo is of the swimming pool area. Notice the fancy swimming area and then the poverty right over the fence! It's really kind of sad. One sees this all over Morocco.....the very wealthy and the very poor. I guess we fall right in between. We have enough $$ to eat at this restaurant, but not enough to join the club and swim or play tennis!! :)
The last two photos are from our Friday night meal. We like to stop at this restaurant that is right beside the gas station, so we call is the "Gas Station Restaurant"! (very clever, right?....but both of us know what place we are talking about every time, so it works!) :) The place has a wonderful little fountain in the middle that we like to sit by. (Notice the place is just packed??...NOT!.....it never is!) Then Marcia took a photo of me by one of the many beautiful mosaic walls. We usually order a Moroccan Salad (chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, parsley, tuna and seasonings), a huge piece of flat bread and Moroccan tea (hot, mint, sugary tea). It costs about $2.50 and is delicious!
The weekend wasn't too exciting. Mid-term grades are due at 8am tomorrow am, so I spent most of yesterday and part of today over at school preparing them. We did get a nice walk in on the beach tonight! Oh, I nearly forgot... Marcia and I also made a HUGE step in the whole neighborhood-culture thing tonight! When we got back from the beach we decided to try to go into the cafe across the street and have some Moroccan tea. Well, MOST cafes are only for men. We were told we could go to this one, but have never seen women in there. It worked!! They didn't stare, they brought us tea AND after we got our tea......the fountain in the middle of the place (that we walk by every day to go into the bakery) started flowing water!! We have never seen that happen in the month we have lived here!!!! :)
Thank you God for a wonderful weekend!
